Ian Springer - Drums
In a short amount of time, drummer/teacher Ian Springer has become a serious musician on the rise within Chicago’s jazz scene. In addition to his performance resume, he is an extremely devoted teacher, with more than 10 years of giving private lessons, group classes, and clinics under his belt.
Ian graduated in 2008 from the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina, earning a B.A. in Jazz Performance on the drum set. During his time in the South, he studied under drumming icon Quentin Baxter (Rene Marie Quartet, Clay Ross) and quickly became a staple within the local scene.
Ian moved back to his hometown of Chicago to attend DePaul University’s prestigious Master’s program on scholarship. In the time since, he has had the pleasure of making music with notable musicians such as Mark Colby, Tony Do Rosario, Phil Woods, A.J. Kluth, James Davis, and has been seen with a multitude of different groups such as ALDRIC, Herbivore, Ryan Adamson’s Medium Ensemble, the Tom Matta Big Band, Dave Taylor’s Crucial Detail, Land Line, Flagstaff, the DePaul Jazz Orchestra, and others. He earned a M.M. in Jazz Studies with distinction in the spring of 2010.
Minimum requirements in his drum set lesson plan include memorization and application of all P.A.S. 40 rudiments, snare drum reading, dexterity development, transcription, and eventually the demonstration of a sophisticated time feel and soloistic vocabulary, the ability to trade 4s 8s and choruses, along with keeping the form of tunes.
